HRM OBA IDOWU ABIODUN ONIRU

(Akiogun II)

The Oniru of Iruland

His Royal Majesty Oba Idowu Abiodun Oniru was born on the 6th of September, 1937. The 12th of 15 children, he had a life-long preparation for the position he now occupies.

He started at St David’s Primary School and finished his primary education at Araromi Baptist School in Lagos. He knew the importance of education yet he enjoyed his sports. He participated in football, wrestling and swimming. He worked on the coconut farms with his siblings harvesting and peeling coconut husks after which they took them to the markets to sell.

Oba Idowu Abiodun Oniru recalls that proceeds from the sales went towards paying their school fees.

He went on to Eko Boys High School for his secondary education where his leadership qualities became obvious. As a result, he was made the financial secretary of Oke Popo Boys Club and then the Chairman of the same club. He represented his school in high jump and pole vault.

He was very popular in his youth and was well known for his love of dance.

Oba Idowu Abiodun Oniru

Oba Idowu Abiodun Oniru remembers the hard training given to him by his father and the experience he gained from the upbringing. He recalls that there was no domestic help. “The children did all the work. Every child had duties they had to fulfil. My father taught us to be thoughtful and be of service to others” he said. As he grew older, Oba Idowu Abiodun Oniru got familiar with the public life of his father. He accompanied his father to the courts and inevitably got involved with the family battles. He worked at the Lagos Town Council now known as Lagos City Council for a year 1963-64 as a rate collector.

He left Nigeria in 1965 to the United Kingdom where he studied Civil Engineering at the British Institute of Engineering Technology in Slough.

His choice to study Civil Engineering was as a result of the great plans he had for the family. He returned in July 1968 after completing his course. Unfortunately, a month after on August 6th, his mother passed away. After mourning his mother, he joined his father in the company set up to develop the family land in Victoria Island and Lekki. The company has experienced immense growth over the years. Over the years, Oba Idowu Abiodun has been honoured with some titles – He was appointed as Justice of the Peace (JP) by Lagos state and an honorary doctorate was conferred on him by the Federal College of Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

In his own words

The children did all the work. Every child had duties they had to fulfil. My father taught us to be thoughtful and be of service to others.
